Paper, pen and clothing

Please do not misinterpret this post as an endorsement of a clothing brand. I am posting this to say out loud what I found “inappropriate” or “not right” (to minimize the hardness of verdict I thought of) in one of FREEWAY’s clothing line. This clothing line was called National Artists Collectors’ Series. From the name itself, this clothing line will feature various and noted Filipino National Artists. All their famous works will be printed on FREEWAY’s clothes.

When I learned about this latest collection of FREEWAY I actually found it very timely. Why? Well simply because, not only the younger generation but Filipinos can actually be educated about our own National Artists and their works. Through this Filipinos can have “a bit of experience” of the culture that these artists tried and still trying to instil on us.

I learned about this via the internet but it was only a few months ago when I personally saw the designs and fabrics used for the National Artists Collectors’ series and I found several “glitches” which greatly disappointed me. I am not a professional critique of fashion or the arts. I am merely a concerned Filipino who happens to love all F. Sionil Jose’s works and a Filipino who wishes good change will happen to this country and its people.

Glitch #1

The collection features FILIPINO works so why use a foreign-looking model? With the current notable rise of Filipina models in the fashion industry I doubt if they can’t find anyone who will fit their “taste.”

Glitch #2

The designs used for F. Sionil Jose’s line were not impressive at all. The impression it gave me was that, it seemed like the excerpts used in the clothings were too profound and “formal” for the graphics and fonts used. In short, the graphics and fonts used did not fit the designs neither did it complement the excerpts from F. Sionil Jose’s works.

Again, I’m not a fashion critique but I just have to say that the fabrics used were also not comfortable to be worn. It was like with one forceful move the clothes will immediately be torn in half.

Glitch #3

Again FREEWAY used a foreign woman instead of a Filipina beauty.

I know the Moai (gigantic human figures carved from rock or Easter Island heads) at Easter island is one of the important and mysterious, if I may add, structures in history but do they really need to use these (another) foreign rock figures to pass across a message pertaining to the essence of knowing and putting into heart your nation’s history? I think not.

Overall I think this particular clothing collection is not really successful in relaying the message that Filipinos need to go back to their, our roots. This is for us be educated more about our past and learn from it. Yes LEARN not to REPEAT the mistakes our forefathers and our older relatives did.

I hope on the next products of the National Artists Collectors’ edition everything will be in order.

“If I ever see you face to face again I’ll ask you why so soon and in your grand debut from death reborn again to life I pray I hate to see you haunting or in your private hell I hope you make it This prayer’s for you yeah Oh wax and wicker that burns throughout the night the light you shine makes me smile You are the candle that turns the darkness back estinguished fire All my life I know he’s waiting All my life I know she’s waiting.”

I take a step from where I am look back from where I’ve started. Through all the wicked things I’ve done, left myself unguarded . Evil with a needle. I’m drowning in my past again. Now I throw it all behind, strength in new beginning. But I can’t lie to you, no! It’s not the way I wanna live my life! I’ve got my destination no! risin from the dust now I can fly! I’ve got my destination! The present is here and now people gather up time to sieze the day. Look all around us, caught up in this pleasure dome. Still stuck in your confusion well I’m here to give a helping hand, but if you don’t need it, I guess you’ve got your masterplan.

I’M A SELF-CONFESSED TRIGGER HAPPY DUDE.  ;))

So here’s my follow-up post about the movie idea I had in mind. The movie will star actors and actresses who are not “overly sprinkled” with sugar and spice. The main cast includes Joel Torre, Ronnie Lazaro, Coco Martin, Sid Lucero, Ryan Eigenmann, Mylene Dizon, Rap Fernandez, Marc Abaya, Tado Jimenez and Maja Salvador.
Title: Agdeppa - an Ilocano word which means to spread one’s hands (http://www.bibingka.com/names/)
Cast (The names are subject to change. Hehe):
Gregorio Lopez or George Lopez (Joel Torre) - An old time prisoner who was sentenced to reclusion perpetua for a crime committed against his former land lady.
Ama or Boy Junior dela Cruz (Ronnie Lazaro) -  A Muslim; the one responsible in overseeing the whole island. He was once a prison guard but chose to live in the infamous island.
Georgina Samuel or GSM (Mylene Dizon) - A lesbian criminal who was imprisoned for a crime she committed against her ex-lover. She is known for being a smartass convict.
Paul Thomas Abog (Coco Martin) - A timid guy whose tendency to burst and destroy everyone and anything in his path can likewise destroy him.
Luis Fatima Ampong  (Marc Abaya) - The son of an infamous head jail warden who was convicted of killing his own father (the infamous head jail warden).
Ruth Marielle Bautista (Maja Salvador) - A nun who was sentenced to go to prison because of fraud. She then became an atheist.
Mikhael Angelo Angara (Ryan Eigenmann) - The son of a respected politician who was sent to prison by his own family. He was a “disgrace” to the clan and was labeled as “the goner” of the media.
Ralph Joseph Amorio (Sid Lucero) - A former university professor who was kidnapped by the New People’s Army but after he was rescued he later joined the said rebel group.
Boy Latak (Tado Jimenez) - The walking “tragic comedy” of the group. He was a clown who was involved in a murder spree. He murdered his family and colleagues in a thanksgiving party organized for him.
Hans Xavier Agustin or Dexter (Rap Fernandez) - A “boy genius,” he is an enigmatic high security prisoner whose crime involved hacking into sensitive government files and selling it to both local and foreign terrorists.
Plot: A yearly hunting event is secretly held in a secluded island but this is not the typical hunting event. All participants are both prey and predator. The participants are not animals but they are humans.
The humans are prisoners coming from all the jails in the country. The hunting event is the government’s answer to the increasing number of prisoners and crimes in the country. At first the event was solely intended to (harshly) embed the iron arm of justice to the offenders but as the amount of blood that has been shed increases the thirst of the people on the seat of power continues to linger. In this bloody cat and mouse game whoever survives shall be granted freedom.
In the latest batch of prisoners who are to be shipped into the island each person will experience realizations, sadness, anger, panic, and fear like never before. This event will be either be their final act or their opening act to a new story.
Notes:
*This is not a copy of The Hunger Games trilogy.
*Unlike in The Hunger Games the contestants do not have a choice but to fight to gain freedom, pride and to survive. In Agdeppa the contestants HAD a choice to live, to be free and to survive but they chose otherwise.
*I do not claim ownership of the photos above. I only collated them in a photo set.

Two weeks ago I watched a special presentation which starred Tado (that skinny guy from Strange Brew) and Patani (that funny and obnoxious girl from Survivor Philippine edition). The two were “tasked” by their so-called Philippine History/ Philippine studies professor to roam around the Philippines and search for the islands that were accidentally formed when Mt. Pinatubo last erupted (1991). Well, I really haven’t watched the entire show because when I switched channel the show was already nearing its concluding part.
What I was able to catch on the show were the last two remaining islands, the Capones and the other island. Both islands are becoming famous for its “untouched” beauty and wonderful diving sites. The unnamed island (Damn, I forgot the name!) caught my attention and so did Tado’s comment on the unnamed island. The name of the island is somehow close or related to the Filipino translation of “hunt/ hunting.” Why? Because according to the tourist guide Aetas (native of Zambales) still roam the island and hunt in the forest for deers. I am not sure though if tourists are allowed to do so. As I was saying Tado’s comment caught my imaginative brain waves. He said, since the island is a hunting ground for the native why don’t the policemen put the criminals here and hunt each other out? Of course he said it in Filipino but heck. So upon hearing this, the “light bulb of ideas” lit on top of my head.
I thought of a story that can be adapted to a movie, this story will be a fusion of action, adventure, dark comedy, psychological-thriller and inspirational. I know, I know this might sound too ambitious for the mainstream Filipino cinema but who knows this might just be one of the keys to rekindle the lost rationality of Filipinos.
I will be posting a separate blog about my “brilliant idea.” I feel it is more appropriate to have two entries about it so as not to bore whoever will read this. Heh ;)
